A Safe Place To Grow Your Public Speaking Confidence
Horsham Speakers Club (HSC) is part of a well-established national organisation called the Association of Speakers Clubs (ASC). The aim of the club and the association is to encourage, teach and support confident public speaking.
At local club level, we’re run by a committee and you’ll always find at least two or more members of the committee at our club meetings should you have any questions.
Whilst it might seem a bit confusing at first (we do love our terminology and in particular you’ll hear us refer to our evaluations a lot), you’ll soon get the hang of it. We have over 30 members and a reputation for being a fun and dynamic group.
It’s fun! Really! It’s also interesting and informative too. You’ll probably be struck by what a diverse group we are: young, old and in the middle, male, female and with members from all around the world!
Apart from our regular members, at most meetings we have one or more new members or first time visitors, so you won’t be alone.
The first half of the evening – Warm up and speeches
You’ll be met at as soon as you arrive and handed the evening’s programme. The first half of the evening starts with everyone being given the chance to take part in an optional 15 second warm up. That’s normally followed by 3 main speeches prepared by different members. Each speech will then be evaluated before we stop for refreshments.
The second half of the evening - Topics and education.
In the second half of the evening we normally have a topics session (a chance to practice your impromptu speaking) or an educational slot or exercise. Towards the end of the evening, we’ll round off with a general evaluation in respect of the whole evening.
Your role
How much you take part is up to you but you’ll find everyone very welcoming and encouraging. You’ll also find you enjoy watching others in the group develop and improve. It’s an inspiring process. As you grow in confidence, there are also opportunities to chair the evening and develop your skills beyond just preparing and delivering a speech.
To find out more come along to a meeting on the second and last Tuesday of the month in the Tythe Barn, Pondtail Road, Horsham, RH12 5JF at 7.45 pm.
